Arunachal Showcases Organic Export Potential, Targets Global Buyers at Tawang Summit

Arunachal Pradesh is stepping into the global spotlight with its organic agricultural potential, showcased at the International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet held in Tawang. The event was jointly organized by APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to promote the state’s organic produce and boost its participation in global agri-export markets.

Key Suggestions to Boost Arunachal’s Organic Exports

Experts from the Centre for Agri Infrastructure Research and Action (CAIRA) proposed two major strategies for non-perishable items:

  • Establish transportation routes for easier access to export centers.
  • Develop primary processing facilities within the state to consolidate agricultural output.

For perishable produce, the recommendation is to:

  • Invest in pre-cooling infrastructure and reefer vans to maintain the cold chain and ensure quality.
  • Enable better pricing for organic farmers through efficient post-harvest handling.

Addressing Post-Harvest Losses and Infrastructure Gaps

According to estimates, farmers in Arunachal lose up to 10% of fruit value due to poor handling after harvest. CAIRA Chairperson Siraj Hussain presented a supply chain analysis of kiwi production, which revealed a significant yield gap when compared to states like Meghalaya.

To improve this, CAIRA recommended:

  • Upgrading pack-houses with advanced sorting, grading, and temperature-controlled systems.
  • Branding organic produce, which can command a 15% price premium in global markets.

Building Resilient Agri Infrastructure

Hussain praised the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the state government for constructing strategic food storage godowns in remote locations like Tawang, Ziro, Seppa, and Roing. This infrastructure proved vital during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a six-month food grain supply.

CM Pema Khandu Emphasizes Export-Driven Agriculture

Chief Minister Pema Khandu reaffirmed Arunachal’s focus on agriculture and allied sectors, citing the export potential of GI-tagged products like:

  • Khamti Rice
  • Mandarin Oranges
  • Yak Cheese
  • Organic Kiwi

He acknowledged Arunachal’s cold storage challenges due to power constraints but proposed leveraging the state’s vast hydropower resources to develop sustainable solutions.

Strengthening Farmer Capacity and Market Access

Agriculture Minister Gabriel Denwang Wangsu stressed the importance of:

  • Farmer training and awareness
  • Enhancing market access for premium produce such as apples and value-added goods.

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev also emphasized identifying Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to enhance participation in global trade fairs, branding initiatives, and agri-export promotions.

Global Buyer-Seller Interactions

The event hosted 11 international buyers from the UAE, Nepal, and Bhutan, along with 17 Indian exporters from seven states and union territories. Over 350 farmers and 50 FPOs from Arunachal Pradesh engaged in productive dialogue with buyers to understand market demands and product standards.

A Unified Vision for Agri Growth

The event was also attended by Chief Secretary Manish Gupta and senior officials from both state and central governments. Their presence reinforced the collective commitment to developing Arunachal’s organic agriculture sector and positioning it for success in global markets.
