PM Modi to Launch Rs 22,000 Crore Expressway in Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the Barak Valley region of Assam on March 14, where he will lay the foundation stone for a major Rs 22,000 crore expressway project. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and infrastructure development.

High-Speed Expressway to Improve Connectivity

The flagship project includes the construction of the Panchgram–Barapani Express Highway, a high-speed road corridor designed to connect the Barak Valley with Guwahati in roughly four and a half hours. This initiative aims to enhance transportation efficiency and support economic growth in the Northeast.

Officials confirmed that preparatory work has advanced significantly. The tender process is complete, environmental and wildlife clearances have been obtained, and land acquisition activities are progressing. Road construction is expected to commence soon, marking a major step in the region’s infrastructure transformation.

The expressway is envisioned as a game-changing development that will provide all-weather connectivity, reducing disruptions caused by landslides and monsoon-related road blockages. Improved transport infrastructure is expected to facilitate trade, mobility, and economic opportunities across Assam and neighboring regions.

Silchar Flyover to Ease Urban Traffic

During his scheduled visit, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for a new flyover in Silchar. The project is aimed at addressing rising traffic congestion and improving urban mobility within the city.

Authorities believe the flyover will contribute to smoother transportation and support the city’s growing commercial activity. Better traffic management is expected to enhance the quality of urban infrastructure and overall commuter experience.

Greenfield Airport at Doloo Awaits Final Approval

Chief Minister Sarma also addressed progress on the proposed greenfield airport at Doloo, confirming that the project received Environmental Clearance on February 19. The proposal will now be reviewed by the state Cabinet before final approval.

The government aims to complete the approval process by March. However, if further administrative steps are required, the project may move forward after the upcoming elections in April.

Long-Term Vision for Assam’s Development

The state government has outlined an ambitious infrastructure roadmap for the next five years, focusing on expanding transportation networks and modernizing connectivity across both the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. These initiatives are intended to position Assam as a strategic growth hub in eastern India.

Large-scale investments in highways, urban infrastructure, and aviation projects are expected to support economic development and improve accessibility. The upcoming visit of the Prime Minister is anticipated to underscore the significance of these initiatives and reinforce the government’s commitment to regional progress.

With major projects underway, Assam’s infrastructure landscape is set for substantial transformation, enhancing connectivity and creating new opportunities for growth and development.
