Deported Migrants Stranded in Panama Plead for Help, Say ‘We Are Not Safe’

Nearly 300 Deportees Stranded in Panama

A distressing situation has emerged in Panama City, where nearly 300 deportees from the United States are stranded in a hotel. Many migrants, including individuals from India, China, Iran, and Vietnam, are awaiting repatriation while being kept under police watch and barred from leaving the premises.

Migrants Hold Signs, Seek Assistance

Deportees held handwritten signs from their hotel windows, pleading for help with messages like “Please help us” and “We are not safe in our country.” The situation has drawn international attention, with human rights advocates questioning the treatment of these individuals.

Why Are Migrants Stranded in Panama?

Panama agreed to serve as a transit country for migrants whom the U.S. found difficult to deport directly. However, their uncertain legal status has led to criticism of the Panamanian government’s handling of the situation. Authorities insist that the migrants are not being detained, but concerns over their safety and future remain.

Indian Embassy Assures Safety

The Embassy of India in Panama has addressed concerns regarding Indian deportees, confirming that they are “safe and secure” at the hotel. The embassy stated:
“Panamanian authorities have informed us that a group of Indians have reached Panama from the U.S. They are safe and secure at a hotel with all essential facilities. Our team has obtained consular access and is working closely with the host government to ensure their well-being.”

As the deportees await further action, international efforts are being made to resolve their uncertain situation.
