Strong earthquake tremors shook parts of Kolkata, West Bengal, and Assam on Friday morning, causing panic across several districts. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the powerful quake originated near Narsingdi, Bangladesh.
🇮🇳 Earthquake Overview: Kolkata Feels Strong 5.5 Magnitude Tremors
Residents of Kolkata and nearby areas reported intense shaking after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck West Bengal around 10:08 AM (IST).
In Assam, a separate 4.7-magnitude tremor was recorded at almost the same time, prompting people to run outdoors for safety.
The epicentre was located 14 km away from Narsingdi in Bangladesh, making the tremors strongly felt across eastern India.
🏏 Cricket Match in Dhaka Temporarily Stopped
The powerful tremors briefly halted the Bangladesh vs Ireland Test match in Dhaka.
Players and officials paused the game for a few minutes until the shaking stopped. No injuries or damage were reported at the stadium.
🌐 Social Media Flooded With Earthquake Videos
Soon after the tremors, social media was filled with videos from residents across Kolkata, Dhaka, Barisal, Comilla, and other regions.
Many office workers in Salt Lake, Kolkata’s IT hub, evacuated their buildings as a safety precaution.
Users posted visuals of:
-
People rushing out of corporate offices

-
Tremors being felt across Bangladesh and eastern India
One user from Dhaka wrote, “This is the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt. Even though the magnitude was moderate, the epicentre was extremely close.”
Another user posted: “Prayers for everyone in Bangladesh and India. Stay safe.”
At present, no major damage or casualties have been confirmed.
🌍 Why Bangladesh and Eastern India Face Frequent Earthquakes
Bangladesh sits at the meeting point of three major tectonic plates:
-
Indian Plate
-
Eurasian Plate
-
Burma Plate
The constant movement of these plates — with the Indian Plate pushing northeast at 6 cm per year — creates intense geological pressure. This makes the region highly vulnerable to earthquakes.
The country is also close to several major fault lines, including:
-
Bogura Fault
-
Tripura Fault
-
Shillong Plateau Fault
-
Dauki Fault
-
Assam Fault
⚠️ Dhaka: One of the World’s Most Earthquake-Prone Mega Cities
Dhaka, one of the densest cities in the world with over 30,000 people per sq km, has been listed among the top 20 global cities at risk of a major earthquake, according to reports.
Rapid urbanization, high population density, and old structures make Dhaka extremely vulnerable during strong tremors.
