In a significant political development, several MLAs who previously switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have secured tickets for the upcoming Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The state will hold both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections concurrently.
BJP Dominates with 60 Candidates for Arunachal Pradesh Elections
On Wednesday, the BJP announced a list of 60 candidates for the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections, which will take place alongside the Lok Sabha elections. Among the names on the list are several MLAs who had defected from other parties to join the BJP.
Political Landscape in Arunachal Pradesh
In the 2019 elections, the BJP emerged as a dominant force, winning 41 seats. Other parties, such as the JDU (7 seats), National People’s Party (NPP) (5 seats), Congress (4 seats), and the People’s Party of Arunachal (1 seat), also made significant contributions to the political makeup of the state. However, over the years, many of these MLAs, including those from the Congress and other parties, switched allegiance to the BJP.
As a result, the Congress now holds just one seat, occupied by former CM Nabam Tuki, while the NPP has two, along with two Independents. The remaining legislators have all joined the BJP fold.
This shift has reshaped the political dynamics in the state, with the BJP strengthening its position ahead of the elections.
